Helena en haar broer, beiden twintigers, zijn met hun moeder in de stad waar ze jaarlijks de zomer doorbrengen. De rust en uitgelatenheid die de vakantie zou moeten brengen, zijn echter wrang omgeslagen. Hun moeder is ernstig ziek.

Helena and her brother, both in their twenties, stay with their mother in the city where they always spend the summer. But the peace and happiness that the holidays are supposed to bring, has turned. Their mother is taken seriously ill. The pressure of a possible death weighs heavily on Helena and she turns away. The room where her mother lies becomes taboo, stained by a body that is stripped of its dignity. In a panic, Helena’s brother keeps everything hidden from the outer world and nurses his mother in silence.

Born in 1989 in Mombassa (Kenya), Pieter Dumoulin graduated in 2012. His graduation film Helena (2012) was selected by IFFRotterdam (2013) and Courtisane festival (2013).

Pieter works as a filmmaker, cinematographer, and photographer, both in cinema and theater. Since 2009 Pieter has been working with theater company tibaldus as documenting photographer and filmmaker. From 2011 to 2014 he collaborated with actor Jan Steen, for whom Pieter made four complementary films to Jan’s PhD-project Being in playing.

For the short film The Reconstruction (2016) Pieter collaborated as a co-director with Timeau De Keyser. In continued collaboration, they realized their first feature film Etangs Noirs (2018), produced by Brussels based Accattone films. Set in the Cité Modèle in Laken (Brussels), the film follows Jimi who tries to return a wrongly delivered parcel, which sends him on a journey through his neighborhood and the metro-network of the city. Etangs Noirs premiered in October 2018 in London at the BFI London Film Festival and at Film Fest Ghent in Belgium.
