De nacht broeit. Onweer rommelt in de verte. Honden blaffen en een man slaat op de vlucht. Mist lost op en de dag breekt aan. Drie jonge zusjes ontwaken in een leeg huis, hun ouders zijn in geen velden of wegen te bekennen. Een lange, warme dag strekt zich over het eiland uit, maar de lucht is nog geladen met de onrust van de afgelopen nacht. Gonzende natuur omringt de meisjes en een godswonder voltrekt zich.
Hondsdagen vertelt het verhaal van drie zusjes die elk op hun eigen manier omgaan met de plotselinge verdwijning van hun vader. Heden en verleden stromen in elkaar over en sluimerende emoties komen tot uiting in de dreigende hitte. Insecten zoemen, de atmosfeer komt tot leven en waanzin woekert zachtjes tot uiteindelijk het onweer losbarst en de regen komt.

The night hums. Thunder rumbles in the distance. Dogs bark and a man runs off. Fog dissolves and dawn is breaking. Three young sisters wake up in an empty house, their parents are nowhere to be found. A long, hot day unfolds on the island, but the air is still loaded with the turmoil from last night. Oppressive nature surrounds the girls and a miracle takes place.
Dog days tells the story of three sisters, who each in their own way deal with the sudden disappearance of their father. Past and present merge and dormant emotions surface in the sultry heat. Insects buzz, the atmosphere comes alive and madness grows gently until eventually the storm erupts and the rain arrives.

Janet van den Brand (°1989) graduated from KASK in 2015. Together with Timothy Wennekes (°1987) they form the Brussels based Dutch directors’ duo NYX. In 2012 they directed the short fictions Rosa, Anna’s lil’ sis and The Name of the Father, and in 2015 Dog days and Prodrome, each has been selected for multiple international film festivals. In 2018 van den Brand and Wennekes released their first documentary feature Ceres, which premiered at the Berlinale Generation and among others was selected for a.o. Visions du Réel and HotDocs. Currently, they are in the process of developing the documentary feature Ten-ten, Cai-cai, the coming-of-age documentary What Makes Us Boys is in production.
