The first episode of the Stone Tapes-series is an audiovisual research of the pseudoscientific Stone Tape Theory, which claims that stones can absorb events from their surroundings into their material. This ambiguous theory pushes scientific techniques like microscopy and cartography into abstraction. Archival images and geophone recordings represent these place-memories as material residue of past events. Exploring the stone formations filmed in Wallonia, Belgium, demands the viewer’s active participation. In turn, the observer becomes the stone tape’s player.
